Care Co-operatives

The Seiriol Alliance is a group of local community representatives, voluntary and statutory organisations who have a vested interest in the health and well-being of the residents of the Seiriol area. The Alliance aims to change the way decisions are currently made by services so that the experiences of local people and the choices available to them as a community become an active part of the thinking, planning and delivery of tomorrow's services. The Alliance will look at ways to make more use of current and future resources to make sure that there is an improved social value and that outcomes are driven by the community.

The Social Services and Wellbeing Act wants us to be considered as equal partners in arranging our own care and support when we need it. We are working closely with Adults Services and the Wales Cooperative Centre to develop care and support cooperatives to help people to maximise their independence at home and in the community.

Cooperatives are for communities that want to work together – giving their members control over how and when they are supported, and being able to remain involved and included in their community. This can make a real difference to our wellbeing, and help tackle the growing concern around loneliness and isolation.

As a charity Cynghrair Seiriol Alliance cannot run a co-operative. However, we can have a role in facilitating and promoting the formation of co-operatives in the Seiriol area. As part of this role, we held a workshop in January 2019 about the Co-operative Model and the potential benefits for our community. The workshop was well attended and we learnt:

1.How mutual benefits are created by working cooperatively

2.Cooperatives help create local connections amongst members

3.Cooperatives empower their members to decide what matters most to them

4.Gives members control and influence over important aspects of their lives

5.Cooperatives provide economic benefits that local people need – care and support cooperatives can create employment opportunities and bring care and support options nearer to home

We look forward to supporting the development of co-operatives in the Seiriol area in the future. Please contact us if you would like more information or help.

Seiriol Dementia Friendly Community

The Seiriol Dementia Friendly Steering Group has been working hard since 2017 to make Seiriol a Dementia Friendly community. As of September 2018 , Seiriol has gained official recognition status by the Alzheimers Society as being a community working towards becoming Dementia Friendly.

We had our official launch on September 21st 2018 and the group continues to raise awareness and understanding by providing Dementia Friends sessions, and we have been working closely with local businesses. Please look out for those businesses with a sticker in their windows confirming their commitment to becoming Dementia Friendly.

In February 2019, Hafan Ni is a new community commissioned resource within Seiriol, offering day opportunities for those living with Dementia. It is held every Wednesday at the Pont y Brenin Hub in Llangoed and offers a variety of activities which have proven benefits. Members are supported to attend with the use of our Community Bus and the help of our friendly and dedicated team of voluntary drivers .
